To be in the best financial position in the future, you should put the $1,000 into the credit card and not use credit cards for something that is not needed right away. If you can save up enough to payoff the remainder of the credit card and pay cash for the procedure, you are golden.

Ask yourself this question: Would you borrow money from a friend or family to have this procedure done?

I would pay off the credit card. If your insurance is not covering the procedure, it usually means it is not life threatening. So you can start savings after you pay off your debt and can still get it done later.

Credit card rates are much higher then student loan rates.

If you believe you can pay a credit card payment then make arrangements to open an account at a local credit union or a local bank of your choosing that is not your regular bank. Any where but Bank Of America. Then write a check and deposit it every month. Don't look at the balance and don't check on it. Then, build up a nest egg that you can have to pay that loan or get you out of a jam if need be.

It is recommended that you put away three months salary.

This will protect you and is much better then a credit card.

Is there any way he can apply for subsidized loans?

You can contact the lender and ask them to bill you for the interest while you are in school/deferment.

Credit cards have higher interest rates and can change those rates for no reason.

You can also go back to defering the interest if times get tough, but this isn't the case if you switch to a credit card.

If you want to pay the interest, just do it through the lender. Try it for a while, you can always change back or try that crazy credit card thing later.

Approach this with great care. Most credit card balances incur interest at a rate notably higher than the standard student loan rate. Some credit cards have promotional deals at very low interest rates (I have used some of these), but the duration is limited and if you can't pay the thing off before the interest rate jacks up, you are toast.

Check on the internet for 0 % interest cards. You will have a 3 % fee, but if you pay them off on time it will be cheaper.
This is what I have done. I used Discover.

I would phone and ask them to consolidate the balances onto one card and close the second account. As well, ask for a lower interest rate. If they are not willing to do either, let them know that there are several other card companies that will offer you a very low rate on balance transfers and if they won't accommodate you, someone else will. This generally works. If it doesn't, check out the balance transfer offers from other card companies.

I would also talk to your bank about a debt consolidation loan - you should get a good rate there if your credit score is good.
